Kitchen Layouts: Work Triangle and Beyond

The kitchen is the most functionally demanding room in the house. Understanding layout principles helps you evaluate a floor plan or design a renovation intelligently.

The Work Triangle

The work triangle — the path between the refrigerator, sink, and cooktop — should have legs of 4 to 9 feet each, with a total perimeter of 13 to 26 feet. No major appliance or cabinet should intersect the triangle path.

Counter Space

A functional kitchen needs at least 158 inches of continuous counter space adjacent to the sink for prep work. This is not a luxury — it is the minimum for preparing a meal that involves chopping or assembly.

Storage and Accessibility

Daily-use items should be stored within arm reach of where they are used. Pots near the cooktop. Knives near the prep counter. Cleaning supplies under the sink.
