Interior Paint Selection: What Really Matters

Interior Paint Selection: What Really Matters

Paint is the cheapest, highest-impact change you can make to a room.

Finish: More Important Than Most Think

Flat finishes are most forgiving of wall imperfections but least washable — appropriate for adult bedrooms. Eggshell and satin are the workhorses of residential paint. Semi-gloss and high-gloss are for trim, doors, and cabinets.

Color: Test Before You Commit

Paint colors change dramatically in different lights. Always test on the actual wall — paint large patches and observe at different times of day before committing.

Quality

Premium paints cover in two coats where cheaper paints need three. For most interior walls, a mid-to-premium eggshell from a major manufacturer is the sweet spot.
